Feng Shui Q & A: Stairways & Bedrooms

Nov 6, 2012 | Feng Shui 101

A reader asked an awesome feng shui question about bedrooms & stairways: “Hello, our bedroom is in an attic. A friend mentioned that a bed facing the doorway which leads to stairs is “bad” feng shui and that we should try using crystals in the doorway, or another feng shui solution to improve energy. Thank you for letting me know what you think?”

My answer:

First of all, is your energy bad? I always ask this because its funny that some people are radically unaffected by certain “bad” feng shui things.  If it wasn’t before this was brought to your attention, you may be the unwitting victim of suggestion.  It happens.

A stairway is a funny part of a house.  You see the stairs and you feel you should go up or down.  Stairs are active.  They can be distracting.  They can pull you out of a room.

So, when you hear that laying in bed facing your stairs is bad feng shui, this is why.

Here’s how I feel about the situation: change the focus.  For example, can you hang a killer piece of ultra-firey art- something small but poignant- over the doorway? Can you keep your door shut so you can’t see the stairs? Can you do something to put your focus INSIDE the room, rather than meandering outside? I’m not sure a crystal will do much. That’s why I explained things first.  Armed with this knowledge, can you find the personally right solution for you?

I bet you can. That is… if it actually bothers you!
