Never Stop Learning!

If you want to really soar and feel deeply engaged in your life- eternally young, if you will!- keep learning! I have a list of things I need to learn in the next three days. And things I need to learn in a week. And next month. And within a few months…. Sometimes the learning curve is so steep that I flip out, and then collect myself and sort it out.  The only real time I run into problems is when I try to …”coast.”

You are either growing or declining.  I hear that time and time again and its true.  Either you keep advancing- even in small ways- in all areas of your life or… you decline.  I can tell you I’ve neglected certain parts of my life and its not fun to start from zero to revitalize them if you really let things go.

Learning keeps you energized. When I read a fabulous book, watch a video or just talk to someone who has something to tell me that I didn’t even know I needed to hear its a huge shot of adrenaline, especially when I’ve grown lazy or complacent.

If you know more you can have more “control” in life.  When you know more, you can handle obstacles better, you can navigate changes more effectively, you can take bigger steps without having them be huge risks.  Knowing more is a way of affecting the quality of your decisions, and all of our decisions shape our todays and tomorrows.

Your life is your teacher. I suppose its a blessing that I’ve been a radical where artistic living is concerned.  I’ve always had the notion that too much “practicality” would somehow hold me back, so I have done the formidably impractical at times for the sake of living life to the fullest.  Yes, things have blown up in my face more than once.  No regrets, though. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do now had I not jumped into the fire a few times! And, I might add, my clients always are my biggest teachers.

Find yourself mentors! I am in a mentor revision period, for I’ve had a few mentors fall from grace and a few new areas I want to explore where I need to look up to people.  Keep your mentors big- don’t learn from people who you wouldn’t want to be like in more than one way.  In other words, a wealthy businessman with a salacious social life might not be your best mentor.  No one is perfect, but watch for ethic levels and the willingness that people have to share with you and help you to grow to be your best you – not the best clone of themselves!  Life coaches are all the rage… and if you pick one, be sure that they can keep the bar high for you so that you are constantly stretching yourself in solid directions…and make sure they, too, are constant learners!

And, of course… you can always read a great book!  This is the time of year that I hit “order” on a huge wish list from Amazon and spend weeks collecting packages and deciding what to read first.

Learning makes everything ok, because nothing is a waste of time when you have an eye toward growing moreo. If something doesn’t work out,  its just an opportunity to do things better!
