What a cool feng shui question today about living over a parking garage. “What if a master’s bedroom is over a garage? I have read that it is also a bad idea to situate a bedroom over a garage. What feng shui cures can you suggest other than making the masters bedroom in earth shades to preserve the energy within it despite “instability” issues that comes with having a bedroom over a garage?”

My Answer:

One of the top 3 gorgeous rentals in all of Los Angeles has an available unit.  Its huge, it is historic, it is well-priced, it has a yard…and it happens to be the unit over the parking garage, directly over it.  And it so happens that no one lasts living there for long.  And, given that I have a choice, I sadly passed on it.

Parking garages and feng shui are, of course, a modern issue and there is no “tradition” as to how to handle this.  3000 years ago, no one was parking their Prius underground.  That said, lets look at the mechanics here: When you live with a garage beneath you, you have a rush of activity beneath you 24-7. The rumbling of a door, the crash of a gate, the energy moving in & out constantly.  It’s one of the least “stable” foundations you can have. 

Under a bedroom, this can create relationship problems, sleep disturbances… anxiety, lack of focus…but its not a one-size-fits-all situation.

Your personal home garage is a lot less of a drag than a big commercial building garage— in a big building, cars come and go frequently and randomly, whereas at home its less of a free-for-all.

To make this situation of living over a garage a bit better, I would double up on carpets or go for something very plush, make sure your bed is sturdy and well-positioned and, depending on the space & your life, I’m sure there is more to do…  But hopefully this sheds some light on the situation!
