My favourite parable told to us by a monk, years ago. Two monks were standing by a river. They noticed a young girl also trying to cross but she was not strong enough. One monk went over and helped her by putting her on his back and crossing the river and dropping her off at the other side. The second monk was speechless in horror. No monk touches a woman and to carry her was much worse. The two monks stopped for the night but the horrified monk was up all night, tossing and turning, angry and couldn’t relax at all. In the morning he was exhausted. The first monk asked why he was so upset and tired and angry and the second monk replied that it was because he had carried the woman and that was the worst thing he could have done. Oh said the first monk..yesterday I carried a person across a river and dropped her off on the other side. But today YOU are still carrying her.
