Anais Nin’s love letters to Henry Miller are fine art. Shakespeare’s romantic works are the odes to universal love. Great artists express love in dynamically unfiltered ways.

While it is one form of magic to feel love, it is another to share it, to affirm it, to proclaim it and to weave it into the fabric of your life.  Handwritten letters of love can become the fiber of this prized and elevated life!

This love proclamation from Franz Kafka is a rousing start:

“I belong to you; there is really no other way of expressing it, and that is not strong enough. How could I, fool that I am, go on sitting in my office, or here at home, instead of leaping onto a train with my eyes shut and opening them only when I am with you?”

Yes, let the love pour in!

No one more passionate, in all it’s revelation and transformation, do I know of than the somewhat mythical love between Frida and Diego.   This letter from Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera makes me see love in prismatic beauty :

“My Diego:

Mirror of the night

Your eyes green swords inside my flesh. waves between our hands.

All of you in a space full of sounds — in the shade and in the light. You were called AUXOCHROME the one who captures color. I CHROMOPHORE — the one who gives color.

You are all the combinations of numbers. life. My wish is to understand lines form shades movement. You fulfill and I receive. Your word travels the entirety of space and reaches my cells which are my stars then goes to yours which are my light.”

I always feel love as a revolutionary form of home.  So did Ernest Hemingway, as he wrote to Marlene Dietrich:

“I can’t say how every time I ever put my arms around you I felt that I was home.”

James Joyce is definitive to his love, surrendered:

“You are my only love.

You have me completely in your power.

I know and feel that if I am to write anything fine and noble in the future I shall do so only by listening at the doors of your heart.

I would like to go through life side by side with you, telling you more and more until we grew to be one being together until the hour should come for us to die.”

And maybe the most expansive of all the famous love notes I have come across, this one from Jimi Hendrix to his girlfriend :

“little girl…..

happiness is within you….so unlock the chains from your heart and let yourself grow—
like the sweet flower you are…..
I know the answer—
Just spread your wings and set yourself
FREE

Love to you forever”

This small sampling of historic love notes and proclamations shines a light on the depths of love, and the power of its affirmation.  Handwritten letters encapsulate and enhance time, as though freezing it all at once, preserving the heightened moments where life is heaven infinitely and forever.

Do you write love letters? Poems? Musings? I hope this stirs you to grab a pen and scrawl your bliss on paper for eternity… xoxo Dana
