Vision boards and inspirational pictures, art, imagery, home design, feng shui, color: there are enormous reasons why I am steeped in the visual, besides the sheer fact that it excites me.

When feng shui in my way succeeds in your home, you live in a world of creative and aesthetic wonder that continually lifts you up and draws you toward your dreams.

There is nothing “hokey” about envisioning a reality and then walking into that reality.  World-class athletes, world-leaders, superstars in every arena and millions of people around the world have experienced the power of connecting vision to intention and desire to produce results that are astonishing.

Today, I wanted to share a bit about the science behind visualization and how it relates to all this feng shui I am so passionate about!

design is thinking made visual

Athletes are prime examples of how visualization can affect your body in a direct way.  Many top athletes site their mental preparation as equally important (or more!) than their actual physical preparation.

On The Best Brain Ever, Debbie Hampton shares the eye-opening study of Alan Richardson who wanted to see if mental preparation really affected athletics:

Australian psychologist,  Alan Richardson, conducted an experiment in which he divided basketball players into 3 groups and tested each player’s ability to make free throws. The first group practiced 20 minutes every day.  The second group only visualized themselves making free throws with no actual practice.  The third group did not practice or visualize.  The results were astounding. The group that only visualized experienced significant improvement almost as much as the guys who actually practiced.

It has been proven that if you relax and visualize a part of your body- your foot for example- and see it moving- you will light up the area in your brain that actually moves your foot without taking a single step.  Srinivasan Pillay – author of  ’Life Unlocked’ and ‘Your Brain and Business’ – shares in Huffington Post some  compelling reasons to use more pictures in your mind.  :

“Expert athletes use imagery and visualization to run their races in their goal times. Studies have shown that these athletes first imagine running the race in the goal time in as much detail as possible and are then able to execute it after practicing visualizing this. One study showed that “…visualizations under hypnosis enabled nationally ranked Stanford male gymnasts to execute for the first time several complex tricks that they had been working on for over a year. The gymnasts were able to eliminate timing errors in the tricks, to increase flexibility, and, possibly, to concentrate strength…” Another study showed that youth soccer players increased their confidence in playing when they visualized their moves. Visualization has also been shown to improve high jumpers clearing the bar.

Tell your brain your plan in a thousand words, and it gets bored mid-way and wants to go to sleep. But draw it a picture, and it will respond with much deeper interest and attention. “

These few and very revealing studies are amazing.  You can find thousands upon thousands of anecdotes about the power of creative visualization online and on bookshelves around the world.

So, how does this relate to your home?

After almost eight years of creating spaces using my own feng shui ways (*based on science and art, not magic or superstition) I have seen again and again what happens when people have daily reminders in their environment to support all that they envision.  Our brains are not wired to easily remember things, so the daily and persistent reminders in your space- reminders that are infused with beauty and radiance-  help to reinforce your intention in ways that are sensational.

If you want to start living more of your purpose, start seeing that purpose in images, symbols, colors, art, architecture… and bring that to your life.

And yes, more science is catching up to my artistry these days! If you want to read more on the correlations between science and space-  if you need a rational and logical push to start shifting your own home-  THIS article will help you see more irrefutable ties between our lives and our environment.

Wishing you beautiful thoughts and visions! xoxo Dana
