Coconut Milk & Honey Hair Smoothie!

When it comes to hair products, it is quite easy for me to go “greener” with beauty because there are only a few commercial hair products that my hair actually likes!  That said, one thing I can’t find anywhere is a deep conditioner that doesn’t make my wavy/curly hair feel like straw or like it was dipped in plastic.  On the hunt for a fantastic deep conditioning treatment, the hair smoothie came to me!

Thank goodness for the Internet!  I watched 15 different hair smoothie vodeos, heard one harrowing story from a friend who tried one recently with cayenne pepper oil in it (!), and tested a few.

Simplicity, ease of buying ingredients and effectiveness all factored into my formula.  Also, I wanted to avoid mayonaise and eggs because I have bad flashbacks of both as a kid playing with DIY beauty and going to school smelling like a — bad– salad!

Welcome to the easy-breezy Coconut Milk & Honey Hair Smoothie.  It is light, so it won’t feel like it is painted on in glops.  It smells like a sweet coconut dream.  And… you likely have all you need… or can get it all easily!

Coconut Milk & Honey Hair Smoothie

1/2 can of coconut milk without additives or sugar.  (Trader Joe’s Light Coconut Milk one is what I use)

2 tbs of honey

2 tbs of coconut oil (again, I get mine at Trader Joe’s)

2 tbs of either castor oil or extra virgin olive oil.  (* I use castor oil and HERE is why if you want to learn more!)

Whir up everything in a  traditional blender, mix with a wire whisk  in a bowl for a good while, or, do as I did and whip this all up with an immersion blender until it is all one smoothie, milky and a bit frothy.

Use the same day. (*I have never left it for more than a day.  You can, I suppose, in the fridge. Shake well before using!)

To use:  Put on damp hair *before* shampooing.  Leave on for 30 or more minutes.  Put on a shower cap and apply some heat from a blow dryer if you want this to penetrate deeper.  I use all my hair treatments at the spa, with my hair all wrapped up in a towel  and tucked in a bun  as I go in and out of the saunas for a few hours.  A blow dryer works just as well.

You can even forego heat and just leave it on for a while while you putter around the house.

Rinse well & shampoo afterward with a mild (preferably sulfate-free) shampoo & condition.   (* you can add a drop of honey to your conditioner to make this extra good)

Many find that the protien in the coconut milk helps to reinforce curls while the oils condition deeply.

Its sensory goodness,  that’s for sure!

Enjoy!!! xoxo Dana
