Time. Some people say it flies. I am not sure I agree. But that’s the thing about time that is interesting: it is built upon perception. Since time has no real beginning, end, and possibly no linear fashion, you might just have as much time as you think you have.

Time is unique to each of us.
Sitting in a boiling hot clay sauna last night, I flipped the pink sand timer and watched it slowly pour. It was a huge hourglass timer, surely clocking at least 20 minutes, slowly draining grain by grain. So I sat, fidgety at first, then stretching, then sweating, watching the bright sand fall slowly. I had to look away. I reviewed my day in my mind. I came up with thoughtful birthday presents for a few people I wanted to give something fun to this year. I make a plan for the week as I stretched. I had the time to envision a tricky creative project that was stumping me as completed, and I was excited to write down what I saw as I sat in this sauna.
Soon, a woman came in, and as I welcomed the cool breeze of the open door, she leaned over and flipped the timer that was dropping it’s last grains.
“What is that, 20 minutes?” I asked.
“Nope, 5 minutes.”
Well, who knew there were so many things that could be accomplished in 5 minutes…and with more seconds to spare?!
Time is a word that we use in a multitude of ways, sometimes loaded with emotion.
Who doesn’t want the bad times to go away faster and the good times to last forever?
Turns out, the word TIME itself has over 30 definitions in the Merriam Webster Dictionary. This is interesting because it shows how many ways we use the word time to explain different things- from the changing of seasons to the moment deemed appropriate to do something.
Ultimately, every definition of time implies that it is moving as fast as we think it is.
Making the most of time is possible.
Claudia Hammond’s book Time Warped: Unlocking the Mysteries Of Time Perception was reviewed by Maria Popova at Brain Pickings (read it all HERE, it is brilliant!) and she shares this excerpt that is very valuable :
“We construct the experience of time in our minds, so it follows that we are able to change the elements we find troubling — whether it’s trying to stop the years racing past, or speeding up time when we’re stuck in a queue, trying to live more in the present, or working out how long ago we last saw our old friends. Time can be a friend, but it can also be an enemy. The trick is to harness it, whether at home, at work, or even in social policy, and to work in line with our conception of time. Time perception matters because it is the experience of time that roots us in our mental reality. Time is not only at the heart of the way we organize life, but the way we experience it.”
So, you can really alter the flow of time yourself since it is a concept that is based on perception.
I love her use of the word “harness” above. I hope you all harness every moment you can!
If you are waiting for your days to pass… you are probably not making the most of time. You might be due to take a risk, get a new job, start indulging in a hobby or finding ways to unload the clutter that is making time feel like drudgery.
If you are wishing you had more time... you might want to spend some time reflecting on where you are spending your time. When you are scattered, energy goes out in every direction and that makes it very difficult to see the fruits of time because so little gets completed.
If you think time flies... you may want to try to spend some time in nature on in daily meditation to become more and more present. After all, right now is the moment that counts!
Wishing you an infinity of time to fill with everything you love! xoxo Dana
