I am a Highly Sensitive Person.
You may be one, too.
The entire study of the HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) is very involved, but you may identify with some of the traits like feeling out of place in big crowds, highly affected by art, easily drained by the emotions of others … a deeply artistic soul, lover of nature, loner by nature. Highly Sensitive People are more common than you think. After reading THIS piece, lots of you have told me you are definitely a Highly Sensitive Person. Welcome to the club!
For the Highly Sensitive, navigating the world and living a full life without being drained or “smushed” by the energy and emotions of others is a skill to master. Even for the less sensitive folks reading this, it is very important to know how to protect your energy against the many drains we encounter in a day.
When you are constantly feeling drained by other people and outside stimulus, your life can look and feel like a rollercoaster ride.
Here are some simple feng shui & energy strategies to help the Highly Sensitive… and everyone else!…to stop getting drained by life!
Get smart about who and what steals your spirit. I have come to realize that indoor shopping centers, environments like bars full of drunk people, TV news broadcasts and passive aggressive people are my energy drains. Luckily, the first few are easy to avoid and the passive aggression I have come to identify quickly.
Lots of people struggle with draining passive aggression. THIS may help you to spot this stuff in its tracks before it drags you down.
Rule of thumb: if a day makes you feel really small, confused or otherwise unsure about yourself and exhausted, ask yourself where it happened and what transpired. At one point or another you chose to engage with something that felt really bad. It may have progressively felt bad. Like, a conversation that started OK and then slowly dragged you into a spiral.
Now you know better!
Even if you can’t avoid what drains your body and spirit completely, there are many more things you can do to keep your energy high.
Surround yourself in light.
Dr Judith Orloff wrote a great article about the ways to protect yourself from absorbing the energies of people around you. While having empathy is amazing, over-attaching yourself to other people’s emotions will drag you down.
” A handy form of protection many people use, including healers with trying patients, involves visualizing an envelope of white light (or any color you feel imparts power) around your entire body. Think of it as a shield that blocks out negativity or physical discomfort but allows what’s positive to filter in. For instance, your sister is on the rampage. She’s about to blow up; you don’t want her anger to shatter you. Now–take a deep breath, center yourself, engage your shield. Literally picture it forming a fail-safe barrier around you which deactivates anger. It simply can’t get to you. Shielding is a deliberately defensive technique aimed at guarding your feelings, not repressing them. It works by establishing a perimeter of protection around you that functionally doesn’t permit harm in.
Switch to full-spectrum light to your home & office. While it doesn’t have to be bright light- and you may prefer if it isn’t bright light- full-spectrum light bulbs emit more colorful light that affects our bodies and minds more like sunlight.
Feed your body to stay grounded. Plant-rich diets are rejuvenating for sensitive people. Ditching caffeine is also very helpful. Epsom salt baths are a wonder to supplement your system with Magnesium. I find that gluten and the sensitive are not a good match. You can also read a ton more HERE on dietary recommendations for Highly Sensitive People.
Of course, living without clutter and designing your space with optimal flow for you- all the basics of feng shui- will also keep your energy at a high.
The more confident you feel that you can protect and recharge yourself, the more willing and able you will be to put your voice and your talents into the world in more vibrant ways. Protect your energy, mine your genius and design your dream life…! xoxo Dana

Black tourmaline as a protective tool. Simple start by buying a piece of black tourmaline. I prefer unpolished. You can pop a piece of black tourmaline under your bra, coat pocket, handbag, add it to your bath for a healing water elixer, taped to your bottled water or next to your computer. Keep it close to your energy field. That’s the secret. It’s a simple way to infuse your auric field with a shield of protection.
Wishing you love and abundance Dana!! Ken
So interesting, I was just thinking of wearing something…. I love black tourmaline… ! thank you Ken!!!!
HI Thank you for this post. I use a piece of black tourmaline as a pendant when I see my mother. We are very close, but I am an empath and she is very intense and drains me. I feel the stone needs cleansing and charging but I wonder if you know of a special extra deep-cleanse for this particular stone that I can do. And how often I might need to do it. It seems to go ‘flat’ very very quickly.
Thanks and blessings if you get time to reply.
