When you take an old “classic’ ( if the word can apply here to something less-than-typically-awesome) like an L-shaped sofa and bring it to new rooms, you create a room-within-a room that has the potential for greatness if- and only if- you style it well! Here are a few L-shaped sofa inspirations to have you thinking high style and brilliant functionality. I use the L-shape often in rooms, and I am pleased to let you know that it can be a fast-track to high-conversation, intensely welcoming feng shui’d spaces.
In the image above, the massive art and larger-than-expected coffee table make this sofa a sanctuary in the midst of a sensory wonderland. Can you see how the large elements help you to settle into the cocoon of the sofa?
Updated in leather and self-positioned in a room to create a sense of central gravity (see how this aligns with the ceiling lights?), this is a study is high style that is very simple.
Avoid the temptation of smushing the L-part of the L-shape into a corner in a small room You will have much more circulation in small spaces if you can leave at least a few inches from the walls. If at all possible, get a smaller sofa to allow for more space!
One of my favorite parts of the Mind Body Green office loft design is the sofa area that we backed in big art and surrounded with books. To make this room-within-a-room, L-shaped design work, it is vital to make the space function well as a lounge, so load up the books, magazines and conversation-starting imagery.
You can fashion your own L-shaped spaces. While I would skip this for a living room, in an office or outdoors covered in outdoor cushions, a DIY sofa set-up like this made of wood pallets can be divine and easy to construct & de-construct on a whim!
Respecting classics, of course, is a strategy that frequently saves the day! Here, the restrained pallet and graphic intrigue of the wall panels creates a very sound and sensible backdrop for a simple L of a sofa that is easy in every way.
Take what you have and update it as you need, keeping in mind that every space doesn’t need to just look good, it has to work for you. Part of making it work is in the passion you have for self-expression and transformation. You can turn most anything (even lavender carpet and mauve sofas, I have seen it!) into something far more divine.
