Do You Have Space In Your Life For The Things You Love ?

While I am pretty certain there is no rulebook for life, I do know that without the space for what you love and what you want to do, these things just don’t happen.

The common thread is always there when you look at people who truly want things and can not seem to have them.  The overscheduled person who beats themself up for not having time to make art.  The woman very intent on love still clinging to the past where it was once safe. The man who wants a new career but can’t reconcile it with the mountain of responsibilities that make life feel stuck.

All these people- and you may identify in one way or another- are suffering from a lack of space.

Do you have space for the things you love?

Before I have started on a whole new chapter in many ways, I had to make a lot of space. Uncomfortable amounts of space.

When you are used to having very little clear space, the feeling can be very overwhelming.

Its like life tapping you on the shoulder and saying, ” Well, those habits you’ve had of waiting and hiding and making excuses… what are you going to do with them now?”

When you make space you can’t hide.

People who take retreats to meditate or be silent or create art often find that most of the retreat starts with a very incredible sense of resistance.  After all, if you are very used to having no space and no time, what do you do with it when you have it?

I bet you can recite 50 things you would do if you had less responsibility and far more time and space.

In reality, though, the habit of being cluttered is a habit that still needs to be broken because when you find yourself lounging in Paradise you may be plagued by the free space and the sudden feeling of no limitations.

Have you seen the people who freak out when they win the lottery? The don’t know how to handle all the freed-up space that money worries once consumed.

If you are struggling to find a way to do more of what you love right now, chances are you need more space.

Create it.  Gradually.

Start decluttering.  Start tossing junk.  Review your life and see where you have been hiding behind patterns and habits that you need to also clear away.  The more honest you can be, the more you can set yourself free.

Give yourself time.  Clearing space is emotional. It isn’t a magic pill. You can’t just toss the  mounains of trash in your house and think you are done.  If you do that, you will likely fill it all promptly with more stuff.  As you clear clutter, understand why you build it in the first place.

What do you really love to do? What do you really want more time to do?

Let it build.

Take your time and learn the lessons.  Dreams aren’t an overnight endeavor.  Love at first sight requires lots of space and patience and time to build into love for a lifetime.  That applies to dreams, habits, heath, friendships… all of it.

When you’re too attached to things, it’s impossible to make space.  You become attached to outcomes.  You become attached to emotional patterns.  You become attached to stuff.  All that attachment comes from fear.

The scariest and most difficult time in my personal life was when I didn’t want to leave a relationship but I really needed space to work out big issues that I couldn’t do when I was in the middle of it.  Luckily, the space was made.  I was pretty sure I’d implode if not.   In clear space, you can dig deeper into emotions.  You can get perspective. You can create clearly.

It’s life-changing to have space in all things.  If you’re too attached, ease into letting things go.

Make more space.  Trust that the right things will come and fill in that space.  Create the things that feel amazing to fill in that space.

This is the best kind of feng shui.  If you want magic, make the room for it.

xoxo Dana
