Earthing: The Movement In Wellness That Is Grounding & Empowering!

May 13, 2015 | Sensory Goodness

Earthing.

The exploration of what it feels like to be more grounded to the Earth all started years ago when I realized I was so spaced-out that I couldn’t get anything done no matter how hard I worked.

Trips to the beach were my grounding, but it wasn’t a sustainable strategy for my lifestyle. Those beach trips really did make a difference in my ability to join society on a daily basis!

With lots of great Feng Shui and energy work I learned later on how to stay grounded in daily life, with the beach and hiking as just a part of the package.

Years ago at Mind Body Green’s Revitalize I found the ultra-power of “grounding footwear when I got a pair of Pluggz flip flops.  I still love them, years later.

Once I started wearing these, I wondered how much more grounded I could feel!

Today I wanted to share some of the benefits of Earthing and some of my own experiments in its power!

First off, let’s start with Philip Stein Wellness band (the blue one).  Philip Stein, known for its intensely amazing watch technology that includes the benefit of Earthing, has bands now that accomplish the same grounded effect with lots of style.

The Wellness bracelet that I misplaced and just joyfully (!) found again has me feeling extra focused and calm. They use Natural Frequency Technology, embedded in a disk in their watches and bands, that is amplified when you wear it.

I’m excited to have it back in my life, but this isn’t what I rely on to stay grounded.

So… what are the benefits of Earthing?

Earthing gets a great endorsement from Dr. Mercola on his at-times controversial website that I happen to love. In this instance, the suggestion that being closer to the Earth can heal you seems relatively sound and innocuous for all of you who are skeptical. In fact, the science that supports his article is fascinating.

“When you’re grounded there’s a transfer of free electrons from the Earth into your body. And these free electrons are probably the most potent antioxidants known to man.

These antioxidants are responsible for the clinical observations from grounding experiments, such as:

Beneficial changes in heart rate
Decreased skin resistance
Decreased levels of inflammation

…..(& the article continues to explain)

Dr James Oschman has conducted research on the Earthing phenomenon and explains…

Inflammation, which in medicine is considered an important part of the healing process, is really an artifact caused by lack of electrons in your tissues. What happens is, the neutrophils deliver the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) to the site of injury, but in so doing, some of those free radicals can leak into the surrounding tissue and damage healthy tissue. That’s what creates the inflammatory response“.

Interestingly, grounding research has now discovered that if you place your feet on the ground after an injury (or on a grounded sheet, or place grounding patches on the balls of your feet), electrons will migrate into your body and spread through your tissues. Any free radicals that leak into the healthy tissue will immediately be electrically neutralized. This occurs because the electrons are negative, while the free radicals are positive, so they cancel each other out.”

So, Earthing may just have physical benefits.

But as for the mental & emotional & fringe benefits, everything from more focus, deeper sleep, reduced stress, more confidence and even greater effectiveness in life have been anecdotally linked to Earthing.

Sounds very good to me!

Want to experience a bit of the energy of Earthing right now?

The website Earthing– purveyors of Earthing products including grounding mats to create more of a feeling of being tapped into the Earth’s energy, explains:

“Go barefoot outside for a half-hour and see what a difference it makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, or walk on grass, sand, dirt, or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt, and vinyl won’t work. They are not conductive surfaces. Experience for yourself the healing energy of the Earth at work.”

Hi there Dana! That was a great video. But, I have a question for you. The quartz crystals, would wearing jewelry (earrings) that contain quartz work the same? I don’t buy stones because to me they’re clutter. Pretty clutter, but still clutter. (Oddly, I used to have a huge rock collection.) So, I guess the question is two fold. One about wearing the quartz and the other about how are the stones supposed to not be extraneous stuff around the house. Thanks so much!

Thank you so very much for the grounding advice. Especially the focus part as I have ADHD and sometimes I feel like I am multitasking yet not being as productive as I would like to be. Plus, I love the color red but don’t wear it much because I am full figured and I feel like it draws lots of attention to me. I am letting that go! I will wear red tomorrow… : )
