Fire Cider is a fermented wellness tonic that is thought to cure colds, boost immunity and provide tons of energy and balance in the colder months of the year. After waking up for two days with a deep chill in the Los Angeles air in September (so unusual!!!) I thought it was time to light up the Fire Cider.
It takes two weeks to be ready so you can start now even though you may not need it yet wherever you are in the world!
Here’s what it looks like as it’s chopped and layered!
You can improvise a bit. I do, as the traditional cider often calls for jalepenos that are way way way too strong for me.
My sister Nicole boosted this fire cider with fresh herbs and no peppers!
Fire Cider:
1 quart sized mason jar
¼ cup peeled and shredded raw horseradish
¼ cup peeled and shredded turmeric
¼ cup peeled and shredded ginger
½ cup white onion chopped
¼ cup minced garlic
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
1 teaspoon fresh thyme(optional)
½ of lemon sliced thinly
1 orange quartered and thinly sliced
2 to 3 cups raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
*raw honey (this can be added before or after fermentation, to taste)
(also optional) jalepeno sliced thin
Place all the ingredients, except for the apple cider vinegar, into the quart sized mason jar.
Then, pour the vinegar over the contents of the jar, ensuring they are all submerged in the vinegar (I added more to the jar shown above before I let it ferment).
Seal the jar and shake vigorously for a few seconds. Store at room temperature for at least two weeks, shaking at least once a day.
After two weeks, strain everything (you can put it back in the same jar after it’s been strained) and store in the refrigerator.
To consume it: I’ve seen people recommend taking small cups of this a day. A spoonful is plenty for me, and a few spoons a day when I’m feeling a bit like I need a boost. Always do what feels best for you, and liberally add raw honey if it’s strong (and you’re not vegan!) !
While the mixture itself is thought to be an overall wellness tonic, here are a few benefits of the ingredients:
Horseradish can help fight against colds and the flu. It also helps with respiratory disorders and urinary tract infections.
Ginger helps with upset stomachs, motion sickness, morning sickness, upper respiratory infections and overall warming.
Onions promote cardiovascular health, and act as an anti-inflammatory.
Garlic boosts your immune system and moderates your blood sugar level.
Oranges boost your immune system as they are rich in vitamin C, a wonder vitamin!
Lemons help with digestion, reduce inflammation and retention of water.
Turmeric is just amazing. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.
James A. Duke, Phd., studied turmeric and published in the October, 2007 issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies, and them summarized in the July, 2008, issue of the American Botanical Council publication HerbCliphis findings: Reviewing some 700 studies, Duke concluded that turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases, and does so with virtually no adverse side effects. (you can read more here!)
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar can aid in detoxing your body, it can lower your cholesterol, and give you a boost of energy. If you can’t make the tonic yet, add a tablespoon of ACV to your water once a day and see how you feel!
I can’t wait until my batch of cider is ready!
Enjoy!
