I do makeovers all the time, day after day, and often a significant makeover of a pretty decent size home, when all the paint, refinishing and reviving is done, can be extremely inexpensive.
Often the major pieces can stay put or perhaps move a bit, and a room can get a makeover from the ground up with lots of fresh energy, polish, creativity and loads of love.
Really, what makes for a makeover is the intention more than anything else, and seeing that intention unfold. Granted, a fun makeover of this nature on a super-low budget won’t get you a new kitchen, bathroom or the like, but you can still get the super-wow factor and story – and the power of that space- in easier ways that you might think!
Today, as I start planning my own home makeover because I need fresh space to film, to photograph, create and entertain, it seemed like a great day to share some easy ideas to take your own home up to a higher level with your personal touch and a whole lot of ingenuity!
Oh, I have plans this year. Office plans, dining table plans, chair makeovers, reupholstery. I’m fairly certain that for under $2000 I can take my whole home to a new level of connection, polish, energy and wow factor. And that number encompasses a whole lot of rooms made over nearly completely.
First off, hanging plants & grouping them is a space lift. You can get macrame, metal, or ceramic baskets to hang them, you can put them on shelves, window ledges, kitchen counters…desks… floors…. You can see from the room above that is totally simple and springs to life with greenery that plants are pretty much everything. A great nursery can cut the cost of plants and give you a plant re-vamp.
I am re-potting trees and big plants in big baskets and ceramic this season to add more of a finished vibe, and I’m dreaming of one of those vertical succulent gardens on my office wall after the heatwave ends…!
Customize. It costs less than you think. It took me a long time to pinpoint this perfect sofa color but I think I got it. I love my big plush sofa, but it’s getting a fabric refresh to feel more like me. Reupholstery is surprisingly inexpensive, and a great place will also re-spring, re-stuff and give you a ton of options to make things your exclusive own. I was quoted about $600 to redo the sofa and $100 more for extras that I love!
Can you customize an old sofa, chair, headboard… ? Yes, you can. And with unlimited fabric options, your one project can change the energy of your whole home.
Seek vintage help! This is the overarching dining room vibe. Marble topped tulip table, vintage… I had the best local vintage seller looking out for me. I fund something even better… italian marble in cream… as I went to see what was found. Many dealers are more than happy to ring you when a deal arrives, as they know you’re ready and waiting to take it off their hands!
D-I-Y Dye! Love, love, love this tie-dyed dropcloth curtain and these are simple to make. As are dip dyed tablecloths, shibori pillows, tapestries and even placemats. I’m doing more formal curtains in the dining room with two toned pink + red tie dye made of veggies and fruit.
Stay tuned… this one may get done soon-soon!
Statement rugs work! While you may need to educate yourself on what you’re getting in a rug (meaning: you don’t want to wind up with a rug that sheds, tears or is plastic-feeling) , there are so many great ones that make a huge, room-revolution-type statement.
Once my rug switches in the living room I know I’ll already feel like I have a completely new home.
Overall my home works for me right now in a big way, but it needs more of this fluidity, freshness and room to grow. And… more art, more detail work in rooms (I have some wall ideas I can’t wait to share) and a few other small shifts to make it really my dream reflection again.
After all, as we grow, our space needs to grow as well! Luckily, you have the creative ingenious power to switch it up!
Happy space-shaping & actualizing those dreams!
xoxo Dana
