Feng Shui Q & A : Skylights In Feng Shui

Nov 1, 2012 | Feng Shui 101

A reader asked a pretty cool feng shui question about skylights: “Is it bad if the master bedroom has a sunroof that is directly over the bed?”

My answer:

(James Turrell’s Sky Window via  House Universe)

Windows in general in a home need to be kept spotlessly clean and well-maintained. They are considered to be the “eyes” of the home, and if you need to think more clearly, you can clean them.  Now, given that it can be really difficult to clean skylights (unless they are very well engineered) they are generally not that great at providing “clear” light.

The other thing with windows is that they are active… they “see” They “open up” a room to a view.  They let energy in.  So, you would be letting energy in…directly over your bed. Not always what you need.

Now, to the issue of safety.  How do you feel with a window hovering over your bed? Do you feel safe? Do you sleep well? Are you frequently exhausted?

Can you see where I’m going with this? No, its not the greatest feng shui thing in the world to have a skylight over your bed.  Its also not the worst…unless its affecting your life.  If it is affecting your life, cover the skylight or create a bed canopy to “shut” the gap in the ceiling.
