How Does Feng Shui Work?

how does feng shui

How does Feng Shui actually work? I won’t speak for all of Feng Shui- as there is a ton of it that is based on Tibetan mysticism and lots of superstition– but I can explain a bit more about how this Feng Shui works, as well as my approach to it all.

Feng Shui is the art and science of organizing and designing environments that support optimal and focused energy flow to enhance survival.  That statement requires that 1. you believe in “energy” that “flows” through the universe and 2. you believe that there is a way to harness energy.

I am not a fan of having anyone believe anything that they don’t intrinsically understand, so let’s look at what is beneath the idea of designing environments that can enhance your life.

Your home is a reflection of your mind. We project into the physical universe what is going on in our heads.  Often I can know tons of vital information about a person simply from looking at pictures of their home.  I can see a person’s level of self-esteem, their mental state, their sense of pride, their aspirations and even their health issues in their spaces. It is not because I possess a magical ability; I understand how space is shaped by its inhabitants after years of study and practice and you can learn the basics quite easily.

Now, let’s talk about that elusive word “energy.”

In Feng Shui you’ll hear the word qi or “chi” tossed around.  It is “life force.”  It is a bit more ethereal than plain electricity from a socket but it is a real thing.  Qi is the energy that animates life. It makes trees grow, it gives us life, it is all of sensory experience.  Qi is actually experiential. You know the presence of qi through your senses.  It has been actually scientifically proven that we do have an “energy field” around us (you can read more about that HERE) and this energy field also responds to qi.

If you are living in a damp basement, the stagnant qi can squish (for lack of a better word) your personal energy field and cause you to feel personally stagnant.  Your finances and your love life may also grow stagnant.  If you have clean space imbued with sensory cues that are expansive you will, in turn, see your energy field expand along with your personal magnetism, your prosperity and abundance on every level.

The tools of Feng Shui include the Five Elements (understanding how nature makes up all of life and how to balance those elements in your own life), Tao (seeing your connection to space and life), the Bagua map (learning what parts of your home correlate to parts of your life), color theory, Yin & Yang (balancing the two qualities of energy- active and passive) and, in my world and my specific approach, an endless kaleidoscope of homeopathic goodies, art  and artistry.

When you make positive changes in your space, you will understand the expansiveness that Feng Shui creates. When you make specific changes in your home based on your needs and desires, focusing energy to support your goals and intention, you will understand the ways in which space reflects your mind and how changing space can change the flow of your life.

Feng Shui in my way is not full of abstract “house blessing” and semi-voodoo practices. Just as in life, you get out of it what you give to it in terms of maintaining a home in excellent repair that helps you think more clearly and feel more securely.  You don’t need to take a leap of faith to use these Feng Shui techniques, but, rather, logical can prevail when you understand what is behind the basic rules and their application.
