Decreasing toxins in your life can dramatically change your energy. We are now flooded with information about living green, non-toxic house cleaning, creating a healthy lifestyle and even making life more meditative- and all of these things are real and majorly beneficial to live a purified, expansive life. What is less talked about and just as powerful in its effect on our lives is Electromagnetic Field (EMF) pollution. Decrease the EMF pollution in your life and you may shocked at the calm, clear-headed difference you feel.
Limit Your Exposure to EMFs by Carol M. Olmstead, Feng Shui For Real Life
In Feng Shui, bau-biology is the study of the impact of the built environment on health and the use of this knowledge in building and modifying homes and workplaces. An important part of bau-biology is dealing with electromagnetic fields, or EMFs. EMFs are formed when you plug something into an outlet, even when the appliance or equipment isn’t turned on, and by power lines and substations in your neighborhood. Studies continue to show that long-term exposure to EMFs can disrupt the body’s nervous system and creates stress. Symptoms of over-exposure included anything from insomnia, anxiety, depression, and aggressive behavior, to a higher risk of some disease. The type of wiring, proximity, and the length of time spent near the EMF are all important.
My approach to Feng Shui is realistic and practical, and I know it’s hard to change our electronic “habits.” Most of us just can’t remove all electric devices from our environment. But, I do want to recommend some simple Feng Shui adjustments especially for your bedroom. Making even one of these changes will limit your exposure to EMFs and protect your health and well-being.
- Laptop – Try to use your laptop on a desk rather than on your lap so you are not directly exposed to the EMFs it generates. The greater the distance between you and the monitor the better. Remember to wash your hands with cold water after prolonged time at your keyboard. Place a living plant within 3 feet of your computer to help remove some EMFs from your environment. You can read about plants that clean the air in the article “Feng Shui Friendly House Plants” on my website.
- Cell Phone – Try to keep your cell phone in your purse, tote, or briefcase rather than on your body when it’s in the active mode. If your cell phone is your only phone and you keep it in your bedroom at night and don’t turn it off, try to locate it on a piece of furniture that’s across the room from the bed, rather than on the night table right next to it.
- Bedroom – Locate your bed on a wall that doesn’t back up to electronic equipment if you can, and avoid using the power outlets located behind the bed and instead use the outlets that are on the side or across the room. Move as many electrical items away from your bed as possible; the greater the distance away from the bed the weaker the field. See if you can switch to a mattress and box spring without metal springs, select linens in natural fibers rather than synthetics, and avoid electric blankets.
- Whole House – Go as EMF-free as you can before bedtime by shutting off mobile phones, powering down computers, turning off printers and other electronics, and shutting down the Wi-Fi. Try to maintain a humidity level at 40-60% in your home, and use natural rather than synthetic fabrics in your décor and in your clothing. And of course, remove the clutter.

Just want to say thank you Dana for tackling this topic. I just brought two new lamps and I plugged both of them right into the power outlets that was directly behind the headboard of my bed. I couldn’t sleep well last night and I knew it might have something to do with the power outlets. I can finally sleep soundly tonight.
