How Your Home Tells The Story Of Your Life…And How To Revamp That Story!

If you want to see where you are at in life, take a look at your space.  It is a reflection of you.

On a very profound level, our environment is nothing more than a reflection of our thoughts, words, actions… an array of intentions all speaking through the health of your houseplants, the way your house is cleaned (or isn’t!) and even the art and color and display of things.

Feng shui in my way elevates environments to make space for the real changes to occur inside of you.

In essence, when you use the tools of feng shui sensibly, you are creating a blueprint for a new level of connection to happen with space, fresher thoughts, more clarity and purity in your thoughts, words and actions.

This can be profound. It’s an ancient concept that has endured because it is so basic a truth that holds up through the ages.

It is Esho Funi.

That’s the Japanese of the day for all of us. I think you are going to like this concept a lot— especially if you are ready to take a real leap ahead in life!

Esho Funi literally means”the oneness of life and environment.”

It was explained in the ancient text of The Gosho in this way:

“If the hearts and minds of the people are tainted, so is their land. However, if their minds are pure, the land also will be pure. The land, in itself, is not divided into two types. Indeed, whether the land is pure or impure is solely determined by our hearts and minds.”

(Gosho, p. 46)

Essentially, our soul is reflected in our space.

If you are seeking answers and looking to make a life change you might find yourself digging through memories or looking for gurus to point you out of your old habits and in the right direction of more money, love, health or happiness (or…all of the above!).  That self-reflection is awesome, but it can be tricky to not get thought in too much thought and theory and too little action.

If I had a dime for every single person who came to me telling me that they had a breakthrough in therapy and the know exactly what their problems are… But even though they know, the can not find a way to actually make the change.

Your environments – and this applies to the furniture as well as the values of the people around you in your space and the general feeling of energy in your space that’s somewhat hard to quantify even though you feel it-  can be a key to catalyzing that change.

Note: even my coolest expansive design techniques can not eradicate a lifetime of self-squashing habits or instantly cure anything.

That said, the best feng shui’d shifts made in your space can open the door to all those changes… in a real way.

Every time I visit Japan I am astonished by how pristine everything is, everywhere I go.  There is a cultural and even at times a religious mandate on cleanliness and order.  It’s no wonder that by the time I take several steps through Narita Airport I feel the watery, lovely yet circuitous thoughts of my American life fall into more of a rhythmic, regular pattern.

Organized space reflects and organized life.

If you are looking to make changes, start simple:

  • clean up
  • wash windows
  • take out the trash
  • replace or repair thigs that are broken
  • watch your thoughts, words and actions.  be mindful of where they can be more thoughful, generous or kind.

And then… you can take things to the next level with artfulness, color and your own powerful intention in mind.  This blog is filled with thousands of tips to help you make home shifts that reflect your intentions. If you’d like to do this life-shifting more systematically at home, my e-guide to DIY feng shui (download it here) can walk you through the process in eight weeks, or a one-on-one consult  can expansively design your space and spark that energy of change.

With Esho Funi in mind, an organized, flowing, glowing home is the reflection of someone who is open, creating, giving and recieving on a high level.   And… isn’t that what we all want?  Allow yourself to have it.  Create it.  Watch how your world gets wider.  xoxo Dana

Amazing as always, Dana. My roommate and I are in the process of cleaning up our space/transitioning into a more “adult” as opposed to post college space, and this is great to read! I know our efforts are worth it.
