DIY Gummy Vitamin C Hearts!

diy gummy vitamin C hearts

Today’s #GlowMoreDaily is a yummy, gummy wellness treat. I admired them for a bit beacause they look like stained glass in the sun… and then I ate every single one!

It’s hot and cold here in Los Angeles, and just totally cold in many other parts of the world… and no matter what the weather, a burst of Vitamin C is always welcome in my world.  Because I can’t buy traditional vitamins (even the natural ones have additives I can’t eat in my diet)  I’ve always been stuck with boring vitamin C powder to sprinkle in organge juice.  It’s fine… but it’s certainly not inspired!

These Gummy C are simple, spectacular and friendly in their ingredients for SCD & Paleo diets, too. Incidentally, the big dose of gelatin is awesomely anti-inflammatory and great for joint care, as my red canister Great Lakes label says boldly.

While you can make these as hearts, stars, bears or any other shape your silicone candy molds may be… you can even pour these in a big tray and then slice them in bite size bits… Gummy C’s are incredibly good. Trial and error got these to a point where they were gummy enough to satisfy the candy-loving spirit I never get to indulge!

In a small pot over medium heat whisk up:

  • 1 cup of not-from-concentrate, no-sugar-added juice.  I did grape here, but cherry is great, and apple would be good, too.
  • 3 tablespoons of gelatin powder (make sure it’s organic and the kind that actually gels, not the pure collagen that won’t set up for you… I used RED Great Lakes brand!)
  • 1 tablespoon honey

And keep whisking until it’s pretty much all dissolved.  You’ll find that some remains and that the rogue few bits left floating you can scoop out with a spoon.

Now, I let it cool to just barely warm (and still fully liquid) and stirred in a tablespoon of Vitamin C powder.  Pure crystals from Trader Joe’s were my pick, but use what you like in a dose you feel great about using.

Scoop with a teaspoon into oiled silicone candy molds or  into an oiled 8″ x 8″ brownie pan and pop in the refrigerator.  In less than a half hour you are ready to go!  (*if you choose the brownie pan, slice into shapes or squares as you’d like.

Store in the fridge!

*NOTE: always check with a doctor before taking any supplements or vitamins, including vitamin C.  you can always make these without vitamin powder for a fun gummy treat!

xoxo Dana
